Addressing Climate Change and Global Health: Baselining greenhouse gas emissions in the global health supply chain

12/01/2024

USAID’s 2022-2030 Climate Strategy sets forth Agency priorities for responding to and addressing the climate crisis. Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and advancing climate resilience in Agency supply chains is a critical step in line with this Agency priority. The Climate Strategy’s objectives are to decrease emissions from transport, energy, health, and other systems, and improve climate resilience for beneficiaries in partner countries.

Thus, USAID GH worked with Environmental Compliance Support (ECOS) to establish GHG emissions baselines for the USAID global health supply chain (GHSC) by identifying, quantifying, analyzing, and reporting on GHG emissions from GHSC contract activities. These assessments focused on key elements of the GHSC and established a baseline from which strategies with specified goals can be developed to reduce GHG emissions.
