Accesibility

Kotoka International Airport is Ghana's only international airport. It is located in Accra, about 8 km from the city centre and the conference venue. More detailed information can be found at: https://www.accra-airport.com/ .

TAXIS are available 24 hours a day at Accra International Airport. They don't have a taximeter, so rates must be negotiated with the driver before entering the vehicle. Accra is a large city, and the price and the ride time (15 to 40 minutes) depend on the distance to the destination area and congestion. Metered taxis operated by Labour Enterprise Trust charge passengers as follows: GH¢ 10.00 (approx. US$ 0.84) for the first kilometre and GH¢ 0.10 for additional 100 meters or part thereof. You can find them in Car Park 5. As a rough guide, the ride from the airport to the Kempinksi hotel is about 8 kilometres, which would cost about US$10.00 .

It is suggested to ask a local resident in advance for the average cost between two points. Taxis can be chartered for an agreed period of time, anything from one hour to a day, for a negotiable fee.

UBER officially arrived in Accra in September 2016 and has since expanded from Accra to other cities. Although Uber might be very popular, there are also alternative ride-hailing apps such Yango and Bolt.

TRO-TRO - safety standards for small private buses, often called "Tro-Tro's," are substandard. It is strongly recommended not to use them.

CAR RENTAL - some companies have an office open 24h a day at Accra International Airport. It is advised to book your car rental online prior to your arrival. Information for car rental can be found at: https://www.accraairport.com/en/car_rental_accra_airport.php

For the whole week, a shuttle service will be provided for all attendees to and from the conference hotel.

See the bus shuttle schedule here.

The official language is English. Local Ghanaian languages are widely spoken, including Akan, Moshi-Dagomba, Ewe, and Ga.

The act of greeting is an important social custom, marking openness and goodwill. Refusing or failing to greet another person could be misconstrued as hostility. A simple smile is an appropriate and adequate greeting, as is a handshake. If shaking hands, please apply the same hand pressure as is offered, and start with the person on the right-hand end of a group and work your way to the left.

The left hand has limited functions in Ghana; it is considered taboo in certain contexts, so try to avoid giving and receiving, gesticulating, waving, and pointing with the left hand. Of course, this does not apply to left-handed individuals, but it pays to use caution.

Private and public hospitals and clinics are available in all of Ghana's cities and big towns. Tourists should contact their travellers' medical insurance company to cover any medical contingencies while away from their home countries.
