Data and the CSMB Report

All data in this report is self-reported by participating organizations on an annual basis. The data submitted undergoes a thorough process of review and validation. However, certain limitations apply, including an inability to consistently distinguish between private-sector and NGO or public-sector sales.

Data from clinical services is not included in this report.

RHSC aims to provide a comprehensive estimate of contributions from the SMO and social business sectors by including any organization willing to share data, with outreach efforts that expand and adapt each year. However, because no complete registry of all currently active organizations exists, some organizations were not contacted during the development of this report, and others chose not to submit data. As a result, coverage remains incomplete and findings should be interpreted accordingly.

How Do We Calculate CYP?

Couple-years of protection (CYP) is a common SRH metric representing the amount of contraception one couple needs to prevent pregnancy over a one-year period. CYP conversion factors are based on the expected amount of time a product can be used before replacement, thus determining the number of years of protection a couple has from a given contraceptive method. To ensure consistency and transparency, we updated the CSMB Report to use one set of CYP factors, based on widespread community usage.

A Community-Agreed Impact Metric

“Uterine evacuations” is a new impact metric for safe abortion commodities that was developed for this report. The methodology for calculating the number of uterine evacuations was co-developed by several CSMB Report Advisory Group members and incorporates various considerations for converting medical and surgical abortion commodity sales into the number of uterine evacuations.

Data as Collective Power

The CSMB Report highlights the critical role played by the social marketing and social business sector in providing access to SRH products.

  • “This isn’t just about submitting data; it’s about contributing to a collective voice on sexual and reproductive health. In a context where resources are limited and challenges are rising, consistency in our data allows us to show that social marketing works and is effective. Data transparency isn’t just an administrative requirement—it’s a tool and a strength.”
