This is the impact report for the Paso Seguro project, which emerged from the collaboration between Tan U’xil and ForoLAC and was first implemented by Tan U’xil in 2023. This report is based on the assessment conducted at the start of the project in 2023 to take stock of the achievements made within this initiative through 2025.
The Paso Seguro project was born as the only alternative to bring sexual and reproductive health services, counseling, and supplies to women and girls in situations of human mobility traveling through the department of Petén in Guatemala on their way north. Working in collaboration with other civil society organizations, United Nations agencies, and government actors, Paso Seguro reached more than 15,000 women, adolescents, and girls, providing nearly 40,000 services (contraceptives, hygiene kits, pregnancy tests, emergency contraception) under a “no-questions-asked” care model from 2023 to 2025. The Paso Seguro project adapted to the constantly changing migration and funding landscape, expanded its services to include mobile services, and built networks with organizations in Mexico and Izabal, another department in Guatemala, setting a precedent for an approach to sexual and reproductive health in the context of human mobility that is unparalleled in Petén.
We invite you to read this report, which highlights the project’s activities, results, achievements, and significance, but also tells the story of the many women, adolescents, and girls who passed through Petén during those years, the people who led the initiative, those who supported it, and those who witnessed the work that was carried out.
